Executive Summary

Blue Owl Capital is a $319 billion alternative asset manager whose earnings come mostly from management fees on permanent capital: direct lending and alternative credit, net lease and data center real estate, and minority stakes in other private-markets firms. Eighty-five percent of its management fees come from capital that does not have to be re-raised. At $9.33 the stock trades at about 10.7 times trailing distributable earnings, down from roughly 30 times at its January 2025 peak, even though distributable earnings per share rose 13% over the same stretch and grew 9% in the latest quarter. The discount reflects real headlines: an Oracle force majeure notice on Project Jupiter, the Loparex write-down, questions about private-credit marks and slower retail fundraising. The 9.9% dividend is not fully covered by distributable earnings this year. In this report we work through what the market is implying about the fee base, how Blue Owl compares with Ares, and which risks matter most.
