Executive Summary

Volkswagen Group is Europe’s largest automaker — ten brands from Skoda to Lamborghini, 321.9 billion euros of revenue, and 9.0 million vehicles sold in 2025 — trading near a 52-week low at the lowest price-to-book ratio in the global auto industry. In this report we examine an arithmetic fact that requires no forecasting: Volkswagen’s listed stakes in Porsche AG and Traton are together worth more than Volkswagen’s entire market capitalization, which means the market currently assigns negative value to the VW brand, Audi, Skoda, Bentley, Lamborghini, the financial-services division that earned 3.5 billion euros last year, and roughly 33 billion euros of automotive net cash. We work through the reasons the market is right to be worried — a collapsing China business, 4 to 5 billion euros of annual U.S. tariff costs, and a 3.8% operating margin — and the reasons we believe the earnings trough is forming: a tariff rate now locked in by treaty, roughly 48,000 announced job reductions, a positive free-cash-flow inflection, and a sub-25,000-euro electric lineup arriving this autumn.
